What is Confederation ?
Why do you think Canada celebrates its birthday on July 1st? Because on that day in 1867 the country of Canada was created. The four provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario all signed the British North America Act margin them into one State.
Confederation is what this coming together is called. As the 19th and 20th century go on the remaining provinces and territories would join confederation. The act that made Canada independent was originally called the British North America Act (BNA Act). In 1982, it was renamed the Constitution Act, 1867. Historians still use the old name to describe the events of Confederation. The information from this page is from: http://myclass.peelschools.org/ele/8/3535/Resources/history.text.pearson.pdf |
